Ep 49 – The Fated Night

Bonus Ep #5 – Ft Sam McDonald from Books of Thoth Residents of Proserpina Park – A Mythology Audio Drama

SCENE STARTS: (Everyone is still at the cafe. “Proserpina Bops” plays in the background.)

DREW: So how much more happened that night?

JESSICA: This is the last part. The part you all have been waiting for.

ALINA: Wait, it is? But that means…

JESSICA: That was the day we all got cursed.

JUN: And the day my brother lost his memories.

SAM: The worst day of my life.

FADE OUT.

NEXT SCENE: (Jessica and Juni are running around searching for Pelu in the park.)

JESSICA: (panting) Pelu!!! Pelu!

JUNI: (panting) Where can he be? If he was actually going to attack Carter, he’d be here.

JESSICA: What should we do? It’s almost sunset!

JUNI: (groan) Then let’s stop Carter instead. If we meet him before he enters the park, there’s no way Pelu can hurt him—

SFX: (Carter magically walks in, of course.)

CARTER: (from a distance) Whoa, where am I?

JESSICA: Oh fuck he’s here.

JUNI: Ughhhh. Okay, come on, it’s too late now. Let’s go get him someplace safe.

JESSICA: Right…

SFX: (They run over to Carter.)

CARTER: Jessica! Hey!! Finally answered my call… Oh. What’s he doing here?

JUNI: No time to explain, we gotta get you to a safer area.

CARTER: Um, I didn’t come here to meet with you. (to Jessica) Why’d you invite this loser anyway? You’re always with him. He can’t seriously believe we’d go on a date with him here right?

JESSICA: We’re not on a date!

CARTER: What? Then why am I here? (pauses) Where are we exactly?

JESSICA: I told you I wanted to talk! How did you think that meant I wanted to date you?

CARTER: Well, what else is there to talk about?

JUNI: How about we talk about you leaving her alone?

JESSICA: Juni, now isn’t the time—

CARTER: Oh and who do you think you are? I mean, I don’t even get why all the girls like you and that other guy. When did skinny little dudes become popular?

JESSICA: Juni and Sam are more attractive than you will ever be because they actually listen when spoken to! Now, against our better judgement, we are trying to save you, so start moving NOW!

CARTER: Whoa! Where did this temper come from? (he grabs Jessica) Come on, why don’t we leave this place and go somewhere for an actual date?

JESSICA: Ugh, For the last time, Carter. Stop. Touching. Me!

SFX: (A creepy laugh is heard relatively close by.)

CARTER: Uh, what was that noise?

JUNI: (hesitant) Is that… Pelu?

JESSICA: What should we do? I don’t want to make it seem like we’re not on his side.

JUNI: But if we don’t get him to calm down, he might actually hurt someone.

JESSICA: We have to try though, right?

CARTER: What is that coming out of the trees?

SFX: (A large creature that resembles some kind of large animal stalks the group. Music starts to play.)

JESSICA: Pelu! Pelu, please talk to us! See? Everything is fine! We’re going to have a talk with Carter and then things will get better. Doesn’t that sound nice?

JUNI: He’s not replying. Also what’s wrong with his eyes? They’re glowing. Did they always glow?

JESSICA: Why wouldn’t he reply? He always responds…

JUNI: (pause) Uh, Jess? What if… that’s not Pelu?

CARTER: How are you guys not freaking out right now?

SFX: (The creature growls and continues its approach. Carter starts to run.)

CARTER: I’m getting out of here!

SFX: (The creature chases after Carter, the only one who made a noise.)

JESSICA: Wait!!! Don’t just run!… Why did it go after Carter if it’s not Pelu?

JUNI: The other issue is, if that’s not Pelu, what is it?

JESSICA: Let’s figure that out later, we have to get Carter first!

SFX: (Jessica starts to run to Carter, but Juni stops her.)

JUNI: We can’t do anything until we know what the creature is, remember? Did you notice anything else besides their eyes? It just looked big and furry.

JESSICA: It barely looked at us. I wonder if it’s visually impaired.

JUNI: Oh okay, that gives us something to work with at least.

JESSICA: We still need to get Pelu to come help, but he hasn’t been answering us.

JUNI: …I think I know how we can get him to respond. But you’re not going to like it.

JESSICA: If I’m not going to like it, then don’t do it— Wait!

SFX: (Juni runs off to catch up to the mysterious creature and Carter.)

JUNI: (As he’s running off) Sorry! But I think this is the only thing that’ll work!

JESSICA: Juni! Why are you running towards the creature? Ugh. Stop!

SFX: (Jessica also runs to stop him.)

JUNI: (to himself while running) Okay, if Pelu sees that I’m in danger, theoretically he has to step in. Although he was pretty mad at us just now, so I may just be running straight toward the danger for no reason whatsoever!

SFX: (Juni gets close enough to the creature and starts yelling at it.)

JUNI: Hey! You! Yeah, I’m talking to you! Why don’t you pick on someone your own size?

SFX: (The creature stops and notices Juni.)

JUNI: (to self) Why did I say that? I’m the same height as Carter!

SFX: (Then starts going towards him instead.)

JUNI: Okay, here it comes. Oh boy, I hope Pelu actually shows.

JESSICA: (catching up) Juni! What are you doing?!

JUNI: Something smart I hope!

SFX: (Just as the creature gets close to Juni, Pelu appears once again and shoves the creature out of the way.)

PELU: Leave. Him. Alone!!

JESSICA: Pelu! You came!

JUNI: Oh thank god.

SFX: (The creature backs away, noticing that they were kinda surrounded. It gives off a nervous snort/chuff.)

JUNI: Well, we can kinda see it better, but I still have no idea what kind of animal it’s supposed to resemble.

JESSICA: It’s kinda got a mane, so I guess a lion? It’s really stocky though.

JUNI: It’s also not the right color for a lion…

SFX: (The creature starts cackling again nervously.)

JUNI: Um… what should we do? I don’t think it’s going to back down.

PELU: Don’t worry, I told you I’d protect you!

SFX: (Pelu starts attacking the Glawackus with fire. The Glawackus’s eyes start magically glowing.)

JUNI: Whoa! Be careful!

SFX: (Pelu ignores Juni and continues fighting.)

JESSICA: What are we going to do? I don’t like how the creature’s eyes are glowing!

JUNI: I don’t either, we need to help.

JESSICA: We should use their weakness against them.

JUNI: Right, so we need to create a lot of noise—

SFX: (All of a sudden, the eyes shine even brighter and directly at Pelu, causing them to go temporarily blind and dizzying him.)

JUNI: What just happened?

SFX: (Pelu mumbles as they try to re-orientate themselves.)

JESSICA: Pelu! Are you okay? Did they hurt your eyes?

JUNI: The creature is running away! (sighs of relief) Maybe we can finally breathe…

SFX: (The creature then tries to run away, but somehow even though Pelu can’t see, still kills it maybe through spearing or something)

PELU: No.. you.. don’t!

SFX: (The creature yells in anguish and then dies.)

JUNI: Pelu! What did you just do, it was going to leave us alone!

PELU: That’s not enough! What if it comes back?

JESSICA: Y-you can’t do that! You can’t just… kill someone.

PELU: But why not?

JUNI: Pelu, murder is… Ugh, nevermind, we still need to get Carter—

TERRY: Nobody’s going to get anyone.

SFX: (Terry, and Sam appear from somewhere.)

JUNI: Terry! Well better late than never—

SAM: What happened here? Who is that…(pause) Are they dead?

SFX: (Terry crouches down to examine the creature.)

TERRY: Looks like it was a Glawackus. Native to Connecticut, makes sense one might live around here. Well, since your memories are all still intact, it seems you all are okay.

JUNI: Memories? It can erase memories?

SAM: Yes, when it needs to. Overall, its lore is very similar to the Chupacapra who kills and eats livestock.

TERRY: The people who claimed to see it probably added that power in as a dumb idea to make it stand out. What were you thinking attacking it?

JESSICA: It’s not our fault! It was going to hurt us.

SAM: So you killed it?

PELU: Yes. It’s my job to protect them.

SAM: Pelu… protecting people doesn’t mean hurting others.

PELU: Of course it does.

JUNI: W-we just need to teach Pelu some more. Once he learns killing is bad, we’ll be okay again!

TERRY: (sighs) This isn’t what you told me Sam. It doesn’t look good.

SAM: I know. But they really meant no harm when they created Pelu.

JESSICA: If you just get to know him, you’ll see that he can be good.

TERRY: Unfortunately there’s no time. You all need to come with us.

JESSICA: Why what’s going on?

JUNI: Sam? Is everything okay?

TERRY: You’ve all been called.

JUNI: By who?

TERRY: My father.

FADE OUT.

NEXT SCENE: (They are in Hades, somewhere dark, cold and possibly dank walking down some stairs)

JUNI: So how much trouble are we possibly in…

TERRY: Now’s not a good time for jokes.

JESSICA: Can we at least explain what happened?

TERRY: Do you two truly understand what is going on? We’re in the underworld. You are meeting a God. And he’s Greek. Your chances of dying just increased ten fold.

SAM: Just let Terry handle this.

JUNI: But Sam—

SAM: You promised me Jun. Please listen to Terry.

JUNI: …Fine.

JESSICA: This is some way to meet the family…

SFX: (The doors open and they walk into some kind of high court where Hades is sitting on a huge throne. He’s too tall to see. Terry steps up.)

TERRY: Father, you called for us.

JUNI: Wow he’s tall.

SAM: Try not to look at him. Even though he’s behind a curtain, it’s still not safe. You could die if you look directly at him.

JUNI: Um, okay… I feel like we were not prepared for this…

HADES: (clears throat) Let’s just get this over with. We’ve heard the complaints and the issue has been examined by the Three Wise Monkeys over there, So, kill the creature and we’re done right?

JESSICA: WHat?!

JUNI: Hold on, that’s not fair!

TERRY:  Let me handle this!

HADES: We’ve had reports all over the park of creatures complaining about some new… squishy thing. So get rid of it and the problem is solved.

TERRY: Yes, but father, this creature, while new, was created in this park. It is a resident and does belong here. The complaints have been insubstantial at best. No one likes change, but they will get used to it eventually.

HADES: Insubstantial? I heard the Leshy had part of their territory burned down. The summer solstice party was ruined and the Aos Si have been physically attacked.

JUNI: All of that was because we were trying to protect ourselves!

SAM: Uncle, from my understanding the Leshy was the one that instigated first in the woods. And it was El Silbon who ruined the party, not us. We were just the victims in the incident.

JESSICA: And the Aos Si kidnapped me first. Shouldn’t they be punished as well?

HADES: Why are humans even in the park? I thought I only authorized one human to be there.

TERRY: …The responsibilities of the park were too much for one person to handle. Jessica and Jun here have been doing a great job helping Sam when needed. I apologize for not notifying you when this change was made.

HADES: I see, so then kill the creature and kick out the humans and everyone will be happy. The creature can remain here in my domain and I’m sure someone else can look after it or whatever.

SFX: (Music starts to play.)

JUNI: What! Sam! Can’t you do anything about this?

SAM: He’s a god, Jun… There’s not a lot we can do.

JESSICA: Y-you’re just scared!

HADES: What did you just say?

JUNI: Jess, stop. Right now. Stop right now.

JESSICA: You won’t even give Pelu a chance! The park itself tried to stop us the very minute he was created! You’re scared of the potential Pelu has!

HADES: Potential? Is this the potential you are referring to? Murdering creatures without a care?

SFX: (Hades drops in the dead Glawackus with a heavy thump.)

TERRY: The Glawackus…

SAM: I was hoping he didn’t know about that yet…

HADE: Your creature will die and that is that. Be grateful I’m even willing to take care of it here.

SFX: (Hades lifts a finger at Pelu and tries to kill him. Pelu yells.)

JESSICA: No! Don’t do it!

JUNI: Pelu!!

SFX: (Jessica and Juni run up to Pelu’s lifeless body.)

JESSICA: No, no! Why would you do this!

JUNI: This can’t be real…

SAM: Jun… Jess…

SFX: (All of a sudden Pelu groans and starts moving again.)

JESSICA: (gasp) He’s alive!

HADES: How can that be? I just killed it.

TERRY: Father, perhaps we need more time to understand the situation.

HADES: No! Where are those monkeys! Why can’t I kill this thing?

SFX: (Hades tries to kill Pelu again. There’s some bickering in the background.)

JUNI: Pelu, are you okay?

PELU: (groans) What happened?

JESSICA: They’re trying to hurt you. But it’s not working! We should leave while they’re still distracted.

SAM: You can’t run from Hades—

JUNI: Well we have to try!

HADES: Enough, what if we just get rid of the children?

TERRY: Father, you can’t do this! Let’s at least talk with the fates first.

PELU: I understand now. This guy is the ultimate bully. Don’t worry, I’ll get him.

SFX: (Pelu starts smashing the room up, attempting to destroy as much as he can while Hades continues to strike him down.)

HADES: Cerberus, stop him from destroying everything!

SFX: (Cerberus attacks Pelu, only to quickly be smacked down once, and then repeatedly hit like what Hades did to Pelu. There are rumbles happening everywhere.)

SAM: Cerberus!! Pelu, please stop!

TERRY: Don’t worry about Cerberus, they can’t die either. But we need to figure out something fast if we don’t want to be buried in rubble.

JESSICA: It doesn’t matter if Cerberus can’t die! They’re clearly hurting. We have to break them up.

HADES: At this rate, my entire hall will be destroyed! Someone do something!

JUNI: Argh, what do you think we’re doing—

SFX: (Music starts to play.)

TERRY: Focus. When you created this creature, did you give them some kind of fail safe?

JUNI: I made their shrine out of popsicle sticks Terry, what do you think?

TERRY: Well, how are we going to stop a creature you didn’t give any weaknesses to?

JUNI: We have to look at their source, their origin right? So what is his weakness? He can’t even die… Wait, the Glawackus…

SFX: (Juni runs off)

SAM: Jun, what are you doing?

JUNI: Hades! I have an idea!

HADES: You? What do you want?

JUNI: You won’t be able to kill Pelu because he’s tied to our hopes and dreams. Our wishes and wants. In order to stop him, we need to forget. Everything. (pause) And I’m willing to do that, as long as you leave everyone else here alone!

JESSICA: Juni! What are you doing? The park… All the times we’ve spent here, do you really want to lose everything?

JUNI: I care more about all of us surviving, Jess. We’ll find each other again. I just know it.

SAM: Jun… Are you sure?

JUNI: Hey, we can still go to Japan together, maybe! Lots to see and do besides running around in parks.

SAM: But this is a serious decision… It’s not something you have to do.

JUNI: I told you, didn’t I? I want to be just like you.

HADES: Monkeys? What do you think?

MONKEY: It… could potentially work, my lord. But our powers work in threes. We’d have to wait and see if it really affects the creature.

JUNI: Wait, what do you mean your powers work in threes? I’m the only one who offered  to do this!

HADES: I’ll give you a few years then. Do it!

TERRY: (gasp) Father, you can’t mean to have Sam take on this burden as well—

HADES: Enough Teresa. You’ve talked back quite a lot today. (To the monkeys) Well? Hurry it up.

MONKEYS CHANT: See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil.

JESSICA: No!

PELU: What is going on?!

JESSICA: Stop, please stop!

SAM: Terry, take care of the park for me, okay?

TERRY: Don’t even talk about that. We will fix this.

JUNI: Come on, please only punish me! Please!

SFX: (The noises and the chanting get louder and louder. Everything fades out until all you hear is Jessica’s breathing and her echoing footsteps.)

JESSICA: Hello? Juni? Sam? Ah!

SFX: (She trips.)

JESSICA: Why can’t I see anything? And where is everyone?

SFX: (She continues walking.)

FADE OUT.
